Our nation's service academies offer four-year college educations to qualified students. Graduates of West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy receive commissions in either the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Merchant Marine, or Coast Guard, and are obligated to serve for at least five years after graduation. You do not need a Congressional nomination to attend the Coast Guard Academy.
Applicants for admission to all of the academies except the Coast Guard need to apply for a nomination, and also contact any academy they are interested in attending. The academies offer appointments to qualified applicants who have nominations. A nominee who does not qualify physically, mentally, or medically will not be offered an appointment.
As a Member of Congress, I can nominate up to ten candidates for each Second District opening at an academy. Each year there will be at least one opening at each Academy. I have appointed a diverse Academy Selection Committee whose members interview applicants and recommend those qualified to me for nominations. This committee includes present and former service members, parents of academy students, educators, and community leaders from throughout my district.
Those seeking a service academy nomination may begin the process by printing out the academy application guidelines, an application form, and calling my Madison office at 608-258-9800 for more information.
